I'm not sure how well this squares with your final invocation of the veil of Maya, but I'm tempted to say a bunch of (probably unhelpful) Churchillhisms of the "never surrender" kind. Sure you've had to evacuate the BEF at Dunkirk, but they're still alive, still ready to defend the island, still thinking about the City and Man. Doubtless that your finest hour is still to come..

Further: I agree with the redoubtable Ashok Karra that your acquaintance sounds like a complete prat. Of an all-too-familiar kind. As A.K. also implies: only the geistlos (spiritless) would ask for a ghost-writer.

The academy is, verily, full of smug morons who would not, in their wildest masturbatory fantasies achieve a degree of the lucidity you show in this post (not to mention in your delightful explication of Strauss on natural right.)

I hope you are not discourarged and that your lack of posts in recent months is due to a whirlwind of sucess in other fields.

Oh, and did I mention that Mr. Karra and I are preternaturally discerning? Not to mention to the other readers of this blog.

-Regards,

-Mal.

"BUT philosophy does not exist from apart from a particular man, Socrates. As such, the only coincidence of the most general with the particular is the philosopher. "

You're shortchanging Anaximander a bit, I'd say. Did Empedocles throw himself into Mt. Etna for nothing?

("Socrates' décadence is suggested not only by the admitted wantonness and anarchy of his instincts, but also by the superfetation of the logical faculty and that sarcasm of the rachitic which distinguishes him. Nor should we forget those auditory hallucinations which, as "the daimonion of Socrates," have been interpreted religiously. Everything in him is exaggerated, buffo, a caricature; everything is at the same time concealed, ulterior, subterranean.— I seek to comprehend what idiosyncrasy begot that Socratic equation of reason = virtue = happiness: that most bizarre of all equations which, moreover, is opposed to all the instincts of the earlier Greeks."
